How We Work

We recognize that what works for one organization might not be the best solution for another. We also recognize that small museums and organizations vary greatly when it comes to funding, staff, resources, and capacity. For this reason, we offer a variety of stand-alone services that can offer focused, goal-oriented results. Likewise, we are happy to work with you to design a combination of services to support the needs of your organization.

To get started with any of our services, we require an initial consultation. Consultations are typically one hour and are free of charge. Consultations can take place in person if you are local, or via Zoom.

The Process, at a glance

You might be curious about how this process works. Below is just one example of how we might frame our time together. Of course, this all depends on your particular project scope and goals.

1.) Book a consultation We are happy to meet with you on site or via Zoom!

2.) During our consultation we will learn more about your organization— what are your goals? What is your vision for the future? Where are you feeling stuck?

3.) We will propose a project scope based on the needs conveyed during your consultation

4.) Once accepted, we will get to work! That might include an initial assessment where we have conversations with staff, board members, and volunteers. We might survey existing procedures, pop in for a public tour, etc., depending on project focus.

5.) If your project includes a report- we will compose this and review it with you. Reports will highlight current strengths and opportunities for growth. You might choose to move forward with additional services with us, or you might use that information for future planning with your own staff. If your project includes any kind of working plans or procedures, we will spend time making sure you are ready to roll, and we are happy to support volunteer/staff training.

6.) We are happy to offer follow-up services and hourly support as needed!

Service Fees

Fees for services will depend on project scope. Fees are determined based on whether or not there is a deliverable, anticipated hours to complete assessments and research, design needs, and resources already in action or otherwise available to the organization (I.e. do you have a collections management system already, or are we starting from scratch?).

We understand that small museums and organizations are often working with small budgets, and we work on sliding scales to help you build capacity and reach your goals with the resources you have.

What About The Other Stuff?

Do we work with private museums/private collectors/hotels/businesses/etc?

Heck yes we do! You might be surprised to learn that private collectors, family historians, and even commercial businesses sometimes have similar needs to museums when it comes to caring for and sharing their histories and treasures. Whether its developing a plan for your archives, finding storage and care solutions for your objects, creating a collection report for your insurance company, or developing permanent or pop-up exhibition materials to aide in storytelling, we are happy to work with you on these projects!

Ok but seriously, we do have some limits.

While we may seem like magicians and wizards, sadly, we cannot actually do all the things. The things we cannot help you with are marketing and deep graphic design work, fundraising, bookkeeping, appraisals, conservation work, anything involving legal jargon, and other highly specialized work. That being said, we are happy to offer recommendations for professionals in these fields who are able to help manifest your visions during our work together.
